Lakeside's jewel is the Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary, the San Diego Audubon Society's 700-acre preserve that is paradise for bird watchers. Every April, Lakeside residents and visitors enjoy a Western Days Parade, in conjunction with Rodeo Days and many other events. Thanks to the Stadium Association, Lakeside has the distinction of bringing in some of the best championship riders in the country for rodeos held there. The town of Lakeside was named after the natural lake in the center of town, Lindo or "pretty" lake. A race track was built around Lindo Lake, where on April 20, 1907, Barnay Oldfield set a world speed record. Lakeside is currently home to 56,095 residents.
